Leigh believes strongly that we must protect the ocean for our future generations. Being an auntie since the age of 8, to now 8 nieces and 3 nephews, she wants to teach kids from a young age that the ocean is amazing, not to have fear and to protect it everyday. Leigh regularly attends schools and clubs and has been the featured speaker in many dive conference’s, National Geographic seminars as well as podcast guest and discovery channel panel guest. Leigh has been invited across the world, from Australia to Fiji, to USA and Europe to present at conferences, seminars and the odd TV show. Leighs presentation varies on her audience, from aged 5 through to adults and she is known to share shark teeth those little hands that jump up during her presentation’s.
Contrary to popular belief, sharks, if you know them, are incredibly shy animals and do not venture easily into divers eye frame, without of course, some tantalizing persuasion. Leigh is one of the few people on this planet, that actually feeds sharks, by hand, no cage and sharks only in the wild. We asked Leigh what she feels about feeding: Personally, I wish I didn’t have to feed them to get them close enough to teach people how completely misunderstood these creatures are. They are critically endangered and we need to spread the message and teach people about their beauty There is nothing better for me that to take someone’s hand who is trembling with fear, guide them into the water and an hour later they are screaming with adrenaline, relief and excitement. The only way to do that, unfortunately, is with food. These are wild animals, and we must do that in a controlled manner, a safe environment and where we do not allow any harm to come to the sharks either. I am privileged to be known as the shark lady and take that role seriously. Educating fishermen, children, families of sharks behavior, what to do and not to do as well as present research and studies to audiences worldwide is an hour for me.
